Recently Obsessed with VTubers? This Tool Lets Me Become a Virtual Streamer Too!
To be honest, I've always been curious about VTubers but hesitant to try. After all, you need 3D models, motion capture equipment—the barrier to entry seemed so high. But a couple of days ago, while scrolling through Bilibili, I saw so many ordinary people using just a regular webcam to create incredibly cute virtual avatars for live streaming. I was instantly hooked! Then I started frantically searching and finally found a tool called Live3D. I gave it a try, and it's absolutely amazing! Today, I'm going to share my experience with you.
Actually, some of you might have heard the name Live3D before, but might not know exactly what it does. Simply put, it's a tool that lets you achieve real-time 3D virtual avatar motion capture using just a regular computer webcam. No expensive motion capture suits, no VR equipment, not even a particularly good graphics card (my laptop's integrated GPU can run it). All you need is a webcam, and you're good to go!
First, How Does It Work?
The core features of Live3D are facial capture and hand gesture recognition. Once you open the software, it automatically detects your face and maps it onto the 3D model. You smile, the model smiles; you blink, it blinks; you turn your head, it turns its head. The latency is very low, and you can barely feel any lag. And it can even track your tongue! Yes, your tongue! You can make funny faces, stick out your tongue, and the model follows along—super fun.
Hand gesture recognition is also impressive. You make a heart with your hands, give a thumbs up, make a fist, and the model's hands mirror those actions. I remember the first time I tried it, I made a "peace sign" at the webcam, and the Q-version character in the screen immediately raised its scissors hand. I burst out laughing—it was just too cute.
It also comes with many preset 3D models, all in a lovely anime style, including lolis, boys, and even cat-eared girls. Of course, you can also upload your own models, supporting the VRM format. If you know how to model, you can even create a unique character from scratch.
Personal Experience: From Zero to Live Streaming in Half an Hour
I'm a bit lazy, so I just used its default "Peach" model (a pink-haired girl). The installation process was simple: go to the official website, download the client, install it, open it, select a model, and click "Start Tracking." It was up and running in seconds. No calibration needed, because it's automatic.
Then I tried adding a camera source in OBS, selected Live3D's virtual camera, and was able to directly stream the model's output to Bilibili's live streaming tool. I did a test stream for ten minutes. The image was stable, expressions were natural, and the comments were all saying "cute" and "I want the model." I almost thought I was a professional VTuber, haha.
Of course, I encountered a few minor issues. For example, in poor lighting, the facial capture would occasionally glitch, with the mouth opening and closing as if chewing bubble gum. Later, I switched to a desk lamp, and with ample ambient light, it worked perfectly. Another time, I wore a mask, and it couldn't detect my mouth, resulting in a poker face expression. So remember to keep your face visible when using it.

And most importantly, most of these features are free! Although some premium models and effects require payment, the basic version is more than enough. I've been happily freeloading.

After using it for a while, I've summarized some methods to make tracking more stable:
- Use it in an environment with even lighting, avoiding backlight or half-bright half-dark face.
- Place the webcam directly above the screen, not too high or too low, with your face centered.
- Avoid wearing high-neck sweaters or scarves, as they might interfere with neck tracking.
- If mouth capture is inaccurate, you can fine-tune the "mouth sensitivity" parameter in settings.
- For richer expressions, enable "Advanced Tracking Mode," but it will consume more CPU resources.
Oh, and if you have multiple webcams, such as a phone camera, you can stream it to your computer as a facial tracking source. But I find the built-in laptop webcam sufficient.
Final Thoughts
Actually, Live3D makes me feel that virtual streaming isn't that far away from ordinary people. I used to think you had to be very professional to try it, but now I realize the barriers have been significantly lowered. Plus, its community is very active, with many people sharing their own models and effects. The atmosphere is great. I plan to learn how to create my own model in the future and share it with you then.
